Hostas, or sometimes called Plantain Lilies, are on of the more well-known and sought after shade perennials. The variety of hosta expands greatly and can be very versatile due to the different sizes and color patterns. Most are different variations of greens and creams. Some Hostas stay low to the ground and stay more compact, while others can become quite tall and spread out a fair amount.
The foliage of Hostas is very distinct in shape, but differ in size with the cultivar. The different color patterns lend well in the landscape and add tremendous backdrops and textures. Long stocks protrude from the luscious foliage to display delicate blooms of whites and lavenders. Hostas do not mind wet feet; especially in hotter climates. This is one perennial everyone should dispaly in the shade.
