Milkweed, or Asclepias, is one of the most important native perennials a person can plant in their garden. It is also the one that requires the most specific care. This is because it is the number one food source nesting place for Monarch Butterflies as they emerge and travel south for the winter. It is important that no harmful or toxic chemicals are used on this plant and only organic measures are taken to ensure the survival of the species.

The great thing about this plant is that it can handle dry conditions and is native to the climate making it an easy choice. Its fuzzy stems and narrow leaves add to the texture and support bright orange clusters of blooms. The blooms alone are worth the addition to any garden. If there’s only one perennial you plant, let it be this one.
